Solved: Riddle of Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch's home improvement plan
IT was a mystery that had neighbours reaching for their deerstalkers to play detective: why had the gorgeous four-storey Victorian house in their road been left empty and wrapped with hoardings for more than a year?
Now, residents in Dartmouth Park believe they have solved the Riddle Of The Empty Villa after architects working for Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch went to planners with a request to alter the four-storey house.
Eighteen months after the property was sold for nearly £3million and registered in his name, Mr Cumberbatch’s design team want Camden Council to approve plans for an extension at the back of the property, once home to the late Labour councillor Ivor Walker.
Mr Cumberbatch, who has cemented his A-list celebrity status with roles in blockbusters The Jungle Book and The Hobbit, plans changes to the back garden, although he has promised to keep in place a mature magnolia tree.
Designs, published on the council website, show he wants to create a boiler room and store underneath a new front garden.
The actor bought the semi-detached Victorian villa from the Walker family in 2015.
Judy Walker, Ivor’s ex-wife, had run a renowned solicitor’s firm from the home. It specialised in family law and was involved in a number of groundbreaking cases over the four decades she lived there. She died in 2014.
Inside, the house boasts original fireplaces, wooden shutters, and stained glass windows on stairs. The mature garden was known locally for hosting an annual Bonfire Night party, a tradition neighbours in the street say they hope Mr Cumberbatch might consider continuing.
But since the house changed hands, the film star has left star-struck residents baffled by paying for builders to put up hoardings around the well-maintained home and then leaving it empty.
One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “There was a little frisson of excitement that he was moving into the neighbourhood. We were hoping he may come and present some prizes at our street party.
“But the excitement quickly turned to boredom and then displeasure after his builders put up ugly black hoardings around what is a rather pretty home and then left it empty for ages.”
Architects Charles Tashima said the plans would “…respect and preserve the original design and proportions of the building, including its architectural period and style, respect and preserve existing architectural features such as projecting bays, decorative balconies and chimney stacks and will not cause the loss of any amenity to adjacent properties with regard to sunlight, daylight, outlook, overshadowing, light pollution or sense of enclosure”. They added that none of the changes could be seen from surrounding streets or public spaces and would not “adversely affect” the conservation area.
Mr Cumberbatch’s agent was contacted for a comment but had not responded yesterday (Wednesday).
Benedict entertaining Martin and Amanda at today’s #setlock. I didn’t take any other photos, but drew some sketches and took notes of what went on throughout the day. Will post them later.
